George W. Matsell

Biography

George W. Matsell, born in 1811, rose to prominence as Police Chief and championed the principles of order and fairness that guided the men and women of the force during a transformative era.

At his death in 1877, colleagues and citizens alike commemorated his steady hand in building a sense of safety, honoring him near Trinity Church Cemetery and Mausoleum.
