Biography

Gessner Harrison, born in 1807, served for many years as the University of Virginia's professor of ancient languages, guiding generations of students through Greek and Latin texts.

He helped establish the classical curriculum and inspired respect for literary craftsmanship, and when he died in 1862 the UVA community mourned the loss of a beloved educator whose lectures and kindness remain remembered.
