Biography
Turner Ashby, born in 1828 in the Shenandoah Valley, developed his deep love of Virginia's rolling countryside while spending formative years among the students and families of the University of Virginia community.
When the Civil War began, he accepted command of Stonewall Jackson's cavalry wing, and his energetic scouting and protective screen earned him devotion from the men he led before he fell in 1862 near Harrisonburg; he is laid to rest in the University of Virginia Cemetery.
