Biography
Gideon Mantell combined a keen eye for fieldwork with keen intellect, making landmark discoveries in palaeontology including the identification of Iguanodon remains. His detailed illustrations and thoughtful interpretations of fossil evidence helped make geology and natural history accessible to a broad public.
Despite personal and professional challenges, he remained committed to science, and his burial in West Norwood Cemetery marks the resting place of a man whose curiosity expanded humanity’s understanding of Earth’s ancient past.
