Henry Hopkins Sibley
1816–1886 (age 70)
Biography
Born in 1816, Henry Hopkins Sibley served first in the United States Army before rising to prominence as a Confederate general, remembered particularly for organizing the bold, though ultimately ill-fated, 1862 New Mexico Campaign that sought to stretch the Confederacy’s reach westward.
In the decades after the war he cultivated a quieter life, striving for reconciliation and supporting veterans of both sides while his family preserved the memory of his service; he is laid to rest in Fredericksburg Confederate Cemetery with many comrades who shared his wartime experiences.
