Biography

Henry I. Gourley served as mayor of Pittsburgh from 1890 to 1893, guiding public works, sanitation improvements, and police reforms so that the city could handle a booming population with increasing dignity.

He also championed sensible municipal finance and encouraged civic engagement, and after his passing in 1899 he found his final rest at Homewood Cemetery, remembered as a steady steward of Pittsburgh's future.
