Biography

Iowa Michigan Royster, born in 1840, came of age as the country debated its future and was shaped by the same hopes and fears that gripped so many young men of his time. He worked alongside neighbors, balanced the demands of work and family, and eventually found himself drawn into the larger conflict sweeping the nation.

He died in 1863 before the war's end, and his legacy is preserved at Historic Oakwood Cemetery, where visitors remember his willingness to stand with his peers during a critical moment in American history.
