Biography

Henry K. Burgwyn, born in 1841, became colonel of the 26th North Carolina Infantry at a youthful age and earned a reputation for inspiring his men with both earnest scholarship and the determined courage expected of military leaders.

He fell while leading a gallant charge on the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, giving his life in the pursuit of duty and leaving behind a legacy of selfless devotion that still moves those who read of his sacrifice.
