Biography
J. Marion Sims, trained in the South, is credited with pioneering surgical techniques to repair vesicovaginal fistula and for developing instruments that advanced gynecology. He founded one of the first hospitals dedicated to women and devoted decades to refining procedures that eased the suffering of countless patients.
While his innovations transformed obstetrical care, they emerged from experiments on enslaved women performed without anesthesia, a reality that has made his legacy the subject of sober reflection even as the medical community recognizes the improvements that followed; he spent his final years in New York, remaining active in professional circles until his death in 1883.
