Biography

Born near Louisville in 1871, J. Swagar Sherley studied law and was elected to Congress as a Democrat, representing Kentucky for twelve years in the early twentieth century. He brought the concerns of his constituents to the national stage, engaging with matters of tariff policy, infrastructure, and the expanding responsibilities of the federal government.

After leaving the House, Sherley returned to Louisville to practice law, continuing to support civic causes and to mentor younger colleagues while cherishing the friendships he formed during his years of public service.
