Biography
James Camp Tappan (1825-1906) rose to brigadier general in the Confederate Army and commanded troops with steadiness during some of the war's most trying campaigns. His leadership was marked by concern for the well-being of the soldiers under his command.
After the war he settled in Arkansas and devoted himself to banking, the legislature, and to healing the frayed social bonds of his region. Tappan also enjoyed mentoring young men in civic affairs and lived to see the state grow into a more peaceful time.
