Biography

James G. Zimmerly combined his medical training with the discipline of military service, graduating from Tulane University School of Medicine before joining the Army Medical Corps. While deployed, he recognized the threat posed by meningococcal meningitis and, through rigorous research, became the first to isolate and develop a vaccine that would protect service members and civilians alike.

He remained an advocate for preventive medicine until his retirement, earning commendations for saving lives through science and ensuring his passage to Arlington National Cemetery reflected the gratitude of a nation he helped keep healthy.
