Biography

James Longstreet, born in 1821, rose through the ranks of the U.S. Army and became a trusted lieutenant of General Robert E. Lee, directing Confederate troops at Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, Chickamauga, and Gettysburg while earning notice for his tactical instincts and calm presence under fire.

After the war he faced scrutiny for his decisions but devoted himself to reconciliation, serving in civilian posts including railroad administration and a diplomatic posting to the Ottoman Empire, and sharing his experience through memoirs before being laid to rest at Alta Vista Cemetery.
