James S. Lithgow, born 1812, was a pioneering industrialist whose leadership in manufacturing, shipping, and banking steered Louisville through decades of expansion.

He invested in the community's prosperity, promoting education and infrastructure, and now rests at Cave Hill Cemetery amid the city he helped to build.
