Jane Pierce
1806–1863 (age 57)
First Lady
Biography
Jane Means Appleton Pierce was a devoted companion to Franklin Pierce and a gentle presence who carried with her the pain of losing three young children, a shadow that shaped her life even before he entered the presidency.
As First Lady she declined the trappings of Washington society, preferring to find strength in prayer and the company of close friends while quietly offering moral support to her husband amid the turbulence of his administration.
