Biography
Jiří Mareš (1928–1997) was a Czech citizen whose life spanned the latter two-thirds of the twentieth century. Born in 1928, he came of age during the interwar period's final years and lived through the profound transformations that reshaped Central Europe.
Mareš's long life witnessed the Nazi occupation, the communist era, and the democratic transition of 1989. He lived through the Prague Spring and its suppression, and saw the emergence of a free Czech Republic in his final years. He was laid to rest at Olšany Cemetery in Prague.
