Biography

Johann Adam Lemp (1793–1862) was a pioneering brewer who helped establish St. Louis as a center of American beer production during the nineteenth century. As a German immigrant, Lemp brought Old World brewing expertise and traditions to his adopted home, founding what would become one of the most successful breweries in the nation.

His legacy extends beyond his commercial success; Lemp's contributions to St. Louis's industrial development and immigrant community were substantial and enduring. He rests at Bellefontaine Cemetery, honored as a founder of an American industry that bears his family's name to this day.
