John C. Pemberton

John C. Pemberton served as a career army officer before the Civil War, and during the conflict he became best known for commanding the Confederate forces at Vicksburg, a bitterly contested campaign that shaped the outcome of the war.

He spent his final years in relative quiet, reflecting on his obligations and the men he led before being buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery among fellow officers.
