John Coughlin served his country during the Civil War and afterward channeled the discipline of military life into civic service, helping others navigate the transition to peace.

He retained a lifelong devotion to those who served, attending commemorations and supporting veteran relief efforts as Arlington became hallowed ground for his generation.
