John E. Pillsbury

Biography

John E. Pillsbury graduated from the Naval Academy just before the Civil War, rose to the rank of rear admiral, and made enduring contributions as a hydrographer whose surveys guided ships through treacherous waters.

He also championed scientific understanding of the oceans, and Arlington National Cemetery pays tribute to a sailor whose careful charts steadied the fleet.
