John Edson Sweet, born in 1832, was a mechanical engineer whose inventive skill, experimentation with machine tools, and leadership at Cornell University helped define the profession for a generation.

He encouraged young engineers to balance precision with imagination, served numerous professional societies, and was laid to rest at Oakwood Cemetery, where his practical ingenuity continues to inspire.
