John George Brown rose from humble beginnings to become one of America’s most beloved genre painters, capturing the tender resilience of urban children with luminous brushwork and a compassionate eye for detail.

He helped lead the American art community as a president of the National Academy and the American Watercolor Society, and his artistic contributions continue to be celebrated alongside his resting place at Green-Wood Cemetery.
