John Grimes Walker

Biography

John Grimes Walker devoted his career to the United States Navy, earning recognition for his steady command during the Civil War and his efforts to modernize the fleet in the years that followed. His service bridged the era of sail and steam, and he inspired those under his charge with a vision of a navy prepared for the challenges of a changing world.

After retiring, he remained a respected voice on naval affairs, and when he passed in 1907 he was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, where his contributions to American seapower continue to be honored.
