Biography

John McEnery, a Confederate veteran turned lawyer, gave voice to Louisiana Democrats during the stormy elections of the early 1870s and, despite the controversy over the 1872 gubernatorial race, continued to advocate for the rule of law.

He maintained a thriving practice, advised younger jurists, and, even as the city healed, contributed to the civic and charitable institutions of New Orleans before being laid to rest at Metairie.
