Biography

John Nolen shaped American cities by applying the principles of landscape architecture and planning to communities large and small, folding parks, schools, and greenbelts into cohesive civic visions that anticipated the needs of growing populations.

He wrote influential books on municipal improvement, advised cities and universities on thoughtful development, and left a record of public service celebrated even now at Mount Auburn Cemetery where he is buried.
