Biography

José de Diego was a towering Puerto Rican intellectual, lawyer, and legislator whose impassioned advocacy in the early twentieth century helped give voice to the island’s aspirations for autonomy and cultural affirmation. His writings, speeches, and tireless work in the chambers of government inspired generations to approach public life with both rigor and principle.

He was admired for his unwavering dedication to education, journalism, and the rule of law, and he is remembered today as one of the architects of modern Puerto Rican identity, now resting in the peaceful grounds of Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery.
