Biography

José Tomás Ovalle was a lawyer whose steady temperament saw him at the helm of government during a time of intense political upheaval. Twice called to serve as Supreme Director, he sought to bring moderation and legal order to Chile’s fragile democratic experiment.

He upheld the rule of law with dignity, reconciling factions and advocating for just governance, and his memory lives on in the Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral, where he rests among fellow patriots.
