Biography

Joseph A. Shakspeare served New Orleans as a lawyer and city councilman before being elected mayor, where he focused on infrastructure, sanitation, and the modernization of municipal services.

Even after leaving office he remained a steady presence in civic organizations, offering counsel on education and public health as the city expanded; his life’s work is remembered with respect in the rolling grounds of Metairie Cemetery.
