Biography

Josiah Macy, born in 1785, built a respected career as a merchant whose ships and warehouses linked cities and towns along the Atlantic. He believed that commerce could be a service to the community when allied with fair dealing and attention to employees.

Macy also supported hospitals and educational institutions, appreciating that business success carried a responsibility to uplift others; his contributions are remembered at Woodlawn Cemetery.
