Biography

Josiah Meigs (1757-1822) was an educator and mathematician who served as the first president of the University of Georgia and brought intellectual rigor to the new republic's academic life.

He later served in federal capacities, including as Surveyor of the District of Columbia and as U.S. Commissioner of the Federal City, and after his passing he was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, leaving a legacy of devotion to learning and public service.
