Joy Morton was born near Lisle and would come to be associated with the Morton Salt Company, building it into a worldwide brand through dedication to quality and an appreciation for both workers and consumers. He insisted on scientific rigor in production and took pride in the steady supply of a commodity that touched every kitchen and industry.

Morton also invested deeply in philanthropy, creating the Morton Arboretum as a place for education and conservation, supporting agricultural research, and leaving an imprint on Downers Grove and beyond as a patron of the arts and sciences.
