Biography
Julia Grant, born in 1826, became known to the nation as the gracious hostess of the White House while her husband led the Union through Reconstruction. She welcomed guests with warmth, supported her husband's efforts, and maintained her own circle of friends and causes.
After years of travel and tireless effort to preserve the General's legacy, she was laid to rest in Grant's Tomb in 1902, remembered as the First Lady whose sincerity endeared her to many.
