Military Officer
Biography
Leighton Wilson Hazelhurst Jr. brought the same courage that had earned him a place at the United States Military Academy to the early days of military aviation, training with the Signal Corps and flying the fragile biplanes that defined the dawn of Army airmen.
When he was fatally injured while testing an aircraft near College Park in 1912, the Army honored his pioneering spirit, advancing the safety and training programs that shaped the aviators who followed and securing his remembrance among those interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
