Martha Coston

Biography

Martha Coston, born in 1826, transformed maritime safety with her invention of a signaling flare system that carried ships toward safer passage during troubled weather.

She passed in 1904 and is forever honored at Laurel Hill Cemetery for the practical brilliance she brought to navigation and national defense.
