Martin Blumenson turned a fascination with the stories of the Second World War into a lifelong vocation, serving as a historian for the U.S. Army and joining the staff of General Dwight D. Eisenhower to record the campaigns that shaped the twentieth century. His meticulous research and eloquent narrative style made volumes such as Breakout and Pursuit and his studies of Patton essential reading for scholars and combat veterans alike.

He remained devoted to honoring the bravery of those he documented, visiting battlefields, conducting oral histories, and ensuring that Arlington National Cemetery would be the final resting place for a man whose work preserved the memory of a generation.
