Biography

Martin Johnson Heade, born in 1819, became renowned for his luminous still lifes of orchids and hummingbirds, as well as his evocative landscapes. A Hudson River School affiliate, he captured American marshes, coastal scenes, and tropical flora with a meticulous eye for light and color that transformed natural subjects into meditations on serenity.

Heade traveled widely to places such as Florida and Brazil in pursuit of inspiration, and after his passing in 1904 his admirers laid him to rest at The Evergreens Cemetery, where the quiet surroundings mirror the calm beauty of his paintings.
