Biography
Richard Thornton was a notable figure of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, whose life spanned the transformative period from the American Revolution through the Victorian era. Born in 1776, he witnessed and lived through some of the most significant social and political changes in British history.
Thornton's legacy was preserved in West Norwood Cemetery, one of London's most significant burial grounds, where he was interred following his death in 1865. His long life of nearly ninety years reflected the extended lifespans becoming more common among the educated classes of his time.
