Biography

Robert Lindley was a master cellist and composer whose artistry helped define the instrument’s role in English musical life. As principal cellist at Covent Garden Opera and a sought-after teacher, he brought warmth and depth to every performance, and his techniques influenced the era’s orchestral sound.

A devoted mentor, he shared the expressive possibilities of the cello with pupils and audiences alike, contributing compositions that showcased its lyrical voice. He is buried at Kensal Green Cemetery, remembered for his musical elegance.
