Biography
Rufus Saxton was born in 1824 and, after graduating from the United States Military Academy, served as a staff officer before the Civil War, then earned recognition for his administrative skill when he led Freedmen's affairs in South Carolina and on the Sea Islands, establishing schools and advocating for land rights for formerly enslaved people.
He continued his commitment to justice after the war by serving as inspector general and in other administrative posts, railing on behalf of veterans and freedpeople, and in 1908 he was interred with honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
