Biography
Samuel Chamberlain served as a Union soldier in the Civil War and later wrote candidly of his experiences in the widely admired memoir, My Confession: The Recollections of a Rogue. His brave service and his clear-eyed recollections helped readers better understand the trials of the war years and the life of a soldier on and off the battlefield.
An accomplished painter, he also captured scenes from the American West and offered visual testimony to the changing nation, contributing works of art that reflected his vivid imagination and restless spirit.
