Biography
Samuel Provoost (1742–1815) was the first Episcopal bishop of New York, answering a call to shepherd the faithful in a young republic and to reconcile the Anglican inheritance with American independence. A respected theologian and educator, he also served as chaplain of the Continental Congress and guided Trinity Church through a period of rebuilding and growth.
His grave in Trinity Church Cemetery honors a spiritual leader whose calm wisdom and devotion to unity helped steady the Episcopal community in the decades after the Revolution.
