Samuel Stillman

1737–1807 (age 70)

Minister

Biography

Samuel Stillman led Boston’s Baptist congregation for decades, preaching with a gentle yet stirring voice that drew parishioners from many walks of life and grounding his ministry in a firm commitment to liberty of conscience. He also acted as chaplain to the Continental Congress and offered fervent prayers for the fledgling republic during its most perilous hours.

Later he helped to organize missionary societies, strove to educate ministers for a growing nation, and encouraged Boston’s citizens to temper their ambitions with compassion. Visitors to Granary Burying Ground may still feel the echo of his sermons in the calm remembrance of his place of rest.
