Christopher Gore
1758–1827 (age 69)
Lawyer/Diplomat
Biography
Christopher Gore trained in law after the Revolution and rose swiftly within the Federalist circles of Boston, where he became known for his calm temperament, refined scholarship, and gifted administration. He briefly served in the United States Senate, later won election as governor of Massachusetts, and advanced internal improvements, banking, and the administration of justice.
When he later represented the state abroad as a diplomat to France, he carried with him the same dignity that won respect from colleagues at home. His grave at Granary Burying Ground joins other patriots who remember that the republic needed steady statesmen as well as fiery orators.
