Jonathan Jackson
1743–1810 (age 67)
Merchant
Biography
Jonathan Jackson built a mercantile career that stretched from local markets to the wider Atlantic trade, and he used the profits of those voyages to support the revolutionary cause, arming Continental forces and furnishing supplies when the young republic desperately needed them. His business acumen positioned him for repeated service on state boards that directed military affairs and finance.
Even after the war he continued to champion commercial justice, ensuring that Boston’s merchants conducted themselves with integrity while giving generously to the city’s schools and religious charities. He now lies with fellow patriots in the shade of Granary Burying Ground.
