Biography
Robert Treat Paine Jr. inherited his father’s legal prowess and republican fervor, practicing law with kindness and writing poems that appealed to the new nation’s sense of identity. He served in the Massachusetts legislature, where he advocated for fair courts and for improvements to the city’s schools and roads.
He also took an active interest in charitable institutions, from orphan care to relief for veterans, and he welcomed discourse on moral and civic virtue in his circle of friends. His remains rest beside his father’s at Granary Burying Ground, marking two generations of service to Massachusetts.
