Sarah E. Goode, a Chicago seamstress and storefront owner, overcame societal barriers to patent her folding cabinet bed, becoming the first African American woman to receive such a U.S. patent.

She encouraged neighbors to embrace inventive problem-solving, and her grave at Graceland Cemetery honors her ingenuity.
