Biography

Stephen G. Burbridge, a Cincinnati lawyer before the Civil War, answered his nation’s call and rose from regimental command to the rank of brigadier general as he worked to keep Kentucky aligned with the Union cause. As military governor and provost marshal, he enforced order in a divided border state while striving to protect Union supply lines and encourage loyalty.

After the conflict he returned to civilian life, offering counsel and public service in a region still healing, and his grave at Arlington National Cemetery stands as a reminder of a determined officer whose decisions shaped a troubled era.
