Biography

Tokugawa Masamaru (1846–1847) was a young member of the Tokugawa family, the ruling shogunal dynasty of Japan. Though his life was tragically brief, he represented the continuity of one of Japan's most prominent samurai lineages.

Masamaru's short existence reflected the vulnerabilities of even the most privileged members of Edo society. He was laid to rest at Zōjō-ji Temple, a major mortuary temple associated with the Tokugawa family.
