Biography
William W. Belknap carved out a storied career as a West Point graduate who rose to general officer rank before becoming Secretary of War, overseeing vital post–Civil War reconstruction and modernization efforts. He focused on improving the Army’s administration while maintaining strong support for the enlisted ranks.
Although his later life included controversy, his early service reflected a genuine commitment to the nation and its defenders, and he remained connected with military communities. Arlington National Cemetery now honors his life, where his contributions and service remain part of the nation’s history.
