Biography

William Woods Holden, born in 1818, rose from modest beginnings to become a newspaper editor and one of North Carolina's most outspoken politicians. He used his editorial voice to champion honest government and later served as governor, confronting violence and advocating for accountability during Reconstruction.

His efforts to restore order and protect citizens led to fierce opposition, but he maintained his belief in the rule of law, even after impeachment and removal from office. Holden died in 1892, remembered for his courage in defending civil rights and for leaving a legacy of principled governance.
